Our Story

Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow

"Things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done." Psalms 78:3-4

Living Word of Deliverance Temple Worship Center ministry was founded in Charlotte, NC in April 1999 by Bishop Dr. David E. Tompkins, Sr. The ministry began as a bible study consisting of three members, Bishop Tompkins, Sylvia Tompkins, and David Tompkins, Jr., and services were conducted in the living room of Bishop Tompkins's home. The spirit of God moved mightily in the bible studies and notoriety of Bishop Tompkins's unique gift to explain and disseminate the Word of God spread. As a result, within a few months his living room would be filled to capacity weekly with saved and unsaved souls seeking to hear the Good News. At the urging of the members of the bible study, Bishop Tompkins sought the Lord's counsel to determine God's vison for the bible study. After much fasting and praying, the Holy Spirit instructed him to establish the ministry as a church and Living Word of Deliverance Temple Church was established.

To accommodate the growing congregation, church services were moved from Bishop Tompkins's home to a conference room inside the Hilton University Place Hotel located in the University City area of Charlotte, NC. During the church's stay at the conference center, auxiliaries, including multiple choirs, an outreach ministry, and ushers, were established. On October 2, 2000, two years after the ministry was formed, the church moved from the hotel's conference center into a commercial building on Woodward Avenue in Charlotte, NC. Even after its third relocation, the church's membership continued to flourish and its outreach programs, such as feeding homeless and providing crisis assistance to families, positively impacted hundreds of lives in the community.

In 2006, under the direction of the Holy Spirit, Bishop Tompkins changed the name of the ministry to its current name, Living Word of Deliverance Temple Worship Center, and in 2012, relocated the ministry to 1823 Gregg Street in Columbia, SC. In 2018, Living Word moved to a larger facility located at 1722-F Broad River Rd in Columbia, SC. On Sunday, October 2, 2022, twenty-four years after God had given Bishop Tompkins the initial vision for the ministry, the church relocated to its new state-of-the art church campus located at 1323 Winyah Dr. in Columbia, SC.
